Saturday 12 December 2015

I have just updated my new website with information about Walking as Research, which is part of the Turner Contemporary's research group into TS Elliot's The Wasteland for an exhibition opening in 2018.

http://elspeth-billie-penfold.com/

The walking group is using walking to explore the poem and TS Eliot's time in Margate where he wrote part of the Wasteland.

Our second walk was planning to follow the route of the tram line from the original Tram Depot to the Albermore guest house on the Eastern Esplanade where T.S. Elliot stayed.

It took us a while to find the remaining track on the old site of the depot on Cromwell Rd as it was part of the redeveloped NHS site and the tracks were carefully preserved embedded into the driveway.

By the time we had finished we'd walked for an hour and a half and found ourselves back at the Nayland Rock Shelter.

I hope you enjoy the update.

If you'd like to take part in any of our future walks please contact me and I'll add you to the mailing list. My email is on my website. Walking will resume in the New Year.

Have a Wonderful Christmas and Wishing you all the best in 2016.

A journey through the Wastelands Walkers

I am very pleased to be part of a walking group as part of the Turner Contemporary Wastelands Research group . For more about this project: http://wasteland.onsocialengine.com/about .

If you sign up you can find out more about the project and there are more details about the walking group on my page.

We are taking our lead from AIR at Central St Martin's:

" using walking as a method for "staying" and paying attention to a place, with an emphasis on keeping the research process open and unknown, outcomes through doing things in the everyday ...."

Our first walk is today at 2pm leaving the Nayland Rock Shelter and walking to Eastern Esplanade.

Let me know if you fancy joining us and I'll ad you to the mailing list. I hope to keep blogging about this as the project progresses.

Saturday 14 November 2015

I am delighted to be included in this exhibition.

I will be at the gallery on Friday 20th November from 2pm until 4 pm as a scheduled event organised to meet the artists. If you are unable to visit at that time but will be attending, please let me know and I will try to be there to meet you.

As those of you who know me will be aware my piece, you can see the image shown at the bottom of this posting, is very personal. It is inspired by the Inca's "Quipus" and my mother's dementia.

Thank you to Natalie Banaigs, Kent Creative Live and all the selection panel for the hard work they put into organising this event.

MEMORY opens on 20th November

MEMORY , the next 'Kent Creative Live' group show, will open at Pie Factory Margate on 20th November 2015.

The show will display 70 pieces of work by Kent artists who responded to the theme 'Memory', covering a variety of mediums: painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, textile, video, installations, etc..

From personal to collective memories, all can be contemplated and enjoyed at this exhibition.

Submitted works have been selected by a jury panel :

Dominic Gunn, director of Gallery Gunn , says "A provocative mix of artwork with an even greater response to the theme of ‘Memory’ than I anticipated. This proves to be an exhibition where a range of media has had each of its own unique qualities used most effectively in pursuit of one truth about memory".

Faye Hackwell, producer at BBC Radio Kent, says: "It has been fascinating to see "Memory" interpreted in so many different ways - from the artists' personal recollections, to how our memories work, to looking at the impacts of dementia on a person's mind.
There are some stunning works inspired by places in Kent which many local people will have their own fond memories of and some very emotive pieces about loved ones lost.

Mark Paul Perry, Contemporary Artist & Director at SEEArt Fair says: "It is encouraging to see the breath of diversity and thought provoking Artwork that has been entered into the competition. "

Thursday 13 August 2015

I am  working on the Crittle windows that used to belong to our art deco house and were uncovered by the builders, buried at the bottom of the garden. Now that the work has fnished on the house I have started to work on the frames.

It had always been my intention to use the frames as supports for weaving. Now that I have started the work I am exploring the possibilities that the frames offer in terms of making new work. I have decided to incorporate art deco motifs into the weaving, using metallic threads which can only be seen in certain lights.

Wednesday 13 May 2015

I've been enjoying painting and have ended up with a very busy June 2015. I thought I would post these up in case you are travelling and fancy dropping by to see the exhibitions.

My Painting "Stone" has been included by the curator Renato Costrini in the exhibtion titled "Metropolis" at the Galleria La Vaccarella in Vicolo della Vacarella, in Rome. I was pleased to be invited to respond to the idea of loneliness in the city and delighted to then have my work chosen. I always find cities quite vibrant and often feel more at ease here than in the countryside, probably as the result of migrating around the world!

The exhibition runs from June 6th until June 13th.
For more about the gallery http://www.lavaccarella.org/

"Stone", 2015, acrylic and graphite on canvas, 50cm x 50 cm

I will also be taking part in Art Expo June Barcelona organised by Artists in the World. I'd like to say thank you to curator and artistic director  Isabel Capdevila Sabanes for selecting my painting "Cove" which will be part of the exhibition at Ada Art Gallery in the centre of the city. For more about the gallery www.galeriaada-bcn.com The exhibition runs from June 13th to the 27th of June. If you happen to be passing through would be great if you can pop in!

 "Cove", 2014, acrylic on canvas, 36cm x 46cm

I am also delighted to have had my paintings accepted by the Global Art agency for The Miami Art Expo19th - 26th June 2015 at the Nina Torres art gallery. Following a submission process, Global Art Agency are offering professional respresentation and selling of the artworks. I am looking forward to working with them as I have had very good feedback from other artists about them. For more about the Art Fair www.themiamiartexpo.com
